Revered interior architect André Fu is back at The Berkeley Hotel with his latest super suite in the form of the Knightsbridge Pavilion Penthouse.
Combining the contemporary and the classic, there is an acute attention to detail and an easy, calming decadence, as you’d expect from both parties. In line with this, the aesthetic draws inspiration from its Hyde Park location. There are hints of this all around with hand-crafted woodwork, oak paneling, and pistachio green onyx, all set within copious amounts of natural light and, to top it off, a luxurious glasshouse feel.
As for areas, the suite features a reception, lounge, entertainment bar and a spacious outdoor terrace for indoor/outdoor living, along with a master bedroom and bathroom, study, walk-in closet, guest bathroom, and an optional connecting twin room, all donning bespoke furniture and decorative lighting. Highlights include the ivory travertine dining table illuminated by suspended lanterns hanging from a crafted timber frame and two decorative bronze lamps influenced by the outdoors.
The designer behind The Knightsbridge Pavilion Penthouse, André Fu, shares his five highlights of the suite.
Entrance feature with the sculptural dining table: The arrival foyer, which boasts floor-to-ceiling oak paneling, features a modernist screen hand-crafted with solid oak that suggests intertwining geometries with the adjoining dining table. The sculptural table, comprised of an oak base and an ivory travertine top, is an artful installation. The piece continues the sense of interconnectedness, working in conjunction with the interlocking, oak-bracket light fixture that hangs above. Emphasizing detailed craft and intertwining geometries, the entrance feature establishes a genuine feeling of luxury in the space.
The green onyx bar: The onyx bar introduces a pistachio green hue to the atmosphere, connecting the space to the al fresco terrace overlooking Knightsbridge and Hyde Park. It directly integrates my inspiration from the lush greenery that is emblematic of the park landscape, bringing a feeling of freshness and newness to the room. Furthermore, the bar reflects my desire to create an authentic aesthetic that responds to its surroundings through the use of color and material.
The bathtub with a view of Hyde Park: My highlight of the bathroom is a freestanding bathtub alongside a pair of timber screens that frame the vista. Overlooking the park and located adjacent to floor-to-ceiling windows, the bathtub immerses into the neighboring green serenity, solidifying the space as an urban retreat. The setting of the bathtub emphasizes wellness and the experiential, which are key aspects that I focus on throughout my designs. Situated to capture the natural light, the bathtub evokes a light and airy ambiance, resulting in a unique feeling of calm simplicity that is balanced and pure. Through its overall sense of place, the bathtub creates a celebration of mindfulness for the guest.
HuaRui bedside lamp – a collectible piece from André Fu living: HuaRui, the bedside lamp featured in the suite from my lifestyle brand, is crafted from cast bronze and inspired by an orchid, reflecting the park’s ecology. The selection of my own design allowed me to organically integrate my signature essence of relaxed luxury into the suite and further enhance the theme of the surrounding landscape at Hyde Park, providing an exciting opportunity to translate my brand’s vision into the local context. In addition, the placement of this piece shows how my broader inspiration is holistically reflected in the design details of the penthouse.
The interlocking screen grouping besides the bedroom sofa: Serving as a focal point of the bedroom, the interlocking screen grouping located behind the sofa celebrates geometry and intricate craftsmanship, continuing the design elements that I introduced in the entryway and resulting in a poetic design journey for the guest. Rooted in timelessness, the detailed, hand-crafted features create a visual story that can stand the test of time.
